Saturday June 30

ART TALK: Ted Goodden

Age:
All ages and families welcome
Time: 1pm – 2pm, with related art making activities to follow from 2pm – 4pm
Cost: Free or by donation
Location: Contemporary Gallery

About the Talk:
Glory Boy is an illustrated children's book, the result of a sustained creative inquiry into the perennial question, "How should we live now?" When Ted Goodden began this project, it seemed to him that the growing environmental crisis required a new understanding of useful activity in the world and that the honeybee was a role model for human behavior. Since the book was published, colony collapse disorder has redefined the way that this book is taken up in the world, underscoring the urgency of the underlying question.

He self identifies as an artist however, not a biologist or a philosopher, and these concerns inform the background of his practice. In this slide-illustrated lecture, Goodden will explore the dialectic relationship between visual image and text in the construction of a children's book.

About the Artist:Ted Goodden completed his BFA at the University of Alberta, apprenticed in stained glass for 3 years with Theo Lubbers in Montreal, QC and 1 year as a journeyman apprentice with Patrick Reyntiens in England and holds a City and Guilds Certificate in Architectural Glass from Swansea College of Art, Wales.  His past cultural work includes serving as Board Member of Artists in Stained Glass, ON, and London Regional Art and Historical Museums and executive member of CARFAC (Canadian Artists Representation), London chapter.   Ted was the Stained glass workshop leader at Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts (Victoria, BC) from 2006-10 and continues to create, teach and lecture on the topic.

Life Drawing Part One: Shorter Poses and Exercises with Clive Powsey

Adult (18yrs and over, all levels)
Time: 6:30pm – 9pm

Each class will begin with a half hour slide show that will illustrate concepts and exercises to be explored for two full hours of drawing from a life model in numerous poses. Through consideration and practice of various exercises we will discover how drawing is not necessarily optical, but rather a two dimensional expression on paper that sources other senses and mental mapping.
